I think this fits in here!!

I'd like to show you all my ''desert campaign'' one of these will be my entry for a group build on another forum.

The rest will be added over the year to make up a desert dio board ( 600mm x 550mm )that I put together , will be stained after I get the glass cover made for it, other small additions will be added as I find them.

I shall post up progress pics when I start and decide which one I will do, in the front spot is the Greif.

New project DSC_1152dd

New project DSC_1146dk

The two resin plusmodel sets are nice, also comes with decals for the ammo and medical pieces.
New project DSC_1154pm

I have made the edging around the board so I can make a ''sand'' base with some hollows etc, instead of a dead flat surface, hope my idea works!

will use this for the sand,
http://www.bnamodelworld.com/tamiya/tm-87110

it also comes in a 250ml bottle, all i need now is some of that hard foam stuff that is shown in the first pic.

and yes, there is an aircraft there too!!

some progress, I finished gluing the tracks which need some paint touch ups, still quite a few pieces to add before I spray over the base yellow again.

It's done with Tamiya spraycan T/S 3 German Yellow, what I have in mind is to give some panel lines, crevices and edges a diluted ''wash'' of humbrol sand (enamel) then lightly mist Tamiya  XF60 Dark Yellow acrylic over this to try for some variation.

Never done a desert vehicle before so finding a balance for the colour on desert vehicles used in the desert theater with that blazing sun beating down on them.

Reading that German vehicles that went there were originally the standard German Grey from factory, I guess I could get away with a newish yellow colour but I'm not after a pristine condition.

As for dirtying them up, it's just sand so more of a dusty look I think, going by the photos below there is mostly a dusty look, and I'm thinking the tracks wouldn't have that rusty look? because of the gritty sand contact as they moved along.

Tips and comments welcome about my thoughts Very Happy

The little 48th kit is very nice to build up, only prob I ran into is the ''fake'' engine access covers? on the hood sides, after fitting the viewing covers, thinking the famous Tamiya fit would be the same I didn't dry fit these first - and of course they were a touch to large for the recess - ripped them off and sanded them down a little before refitting them.

I also intend to put the long radio Arial in the raised position as Tamiya only gives a stored option.

more later,

Hiya Phil

For some reason, I can never get the tamiya dark yellow to dry matt from the rattlecans, and was only when I started using XF60 that it actually came out right.
Dont know if it was just me, but couple of times now its happened.
Bit silly really... I have an airbrush, I should stop using cans...

I built the 35th scale vesion of this, magic kit, but i really do love the 48th scale kits.

Steve

Looking great!  cyclops

That "Grief" half track is surprisingly small!  Wink

Talking about tracks, those look really detailed! Are they individual links?

No that's correct Steve, if T/S 3 rattle it's semi gloss - flatcoat over when decaled fixes that.

Snowy, they are molded , here,
http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/image/10063171z4/70/4

I just sprayed them with Tamiya A/S 12 first then Mr Metal dark iron, light polish and thats it.

here is all the parts on, some are just blu taced so i can remove for a better go at the next spray session,
I had some success making the stored radio long arial upright, but I snapped the damned thing sandind down the top storage bracket :bangs head also made a little ''donut'' so the Mg swivels, will apply after painting and intend to add a few extras when finished.

Still a bit of detail painting to go on some parts yet.

the light is weird on this pic, a bit green

New project DSC_1214cx

New project DSC_1213cx

Now I'm guessing that on a working tank/ halftrack, in the desert with gritty sand, tracks wouldn't have that rusty look like those in France for example? and the general look would be dusty with maybe some caked on sand .

What I am doing with this next is spraying a light misty coat of Tamiya XF60 over the base Tamiya T/S 4, then take it from there.

and forgot to add the fuel can stack on the rear.....

Weathered the Greif with Tamiya weathering set, if I have any complaint about this kit it's Tamiya decals, just too thick backing film for this scale.

I made the Mg swivel with a small made up ''donut''glued on the long pin Tamiya provided on the Mg frame, just something I wanted to do.

I wanted the long Arial in the extended position, the first lot of pics show it not on, I do think the model looks much better with it extended.

Hope you all like my take on Rommel's command vehicle.

There is definitely a difference Phil - now we can see just how good those models look. The Grief is tops Phil and Kubby looks like it's going to be another champ.

Kubel done, not sure what Tamiya did with the standing figure from the Kubel but he looks 7 feet tall next to the Rommel figure!

Thanks guys,

sorry Snowy I missed your post and question, it's just plain old Humbrol flesh 61, with one eyedropper drop of tamiya enamel thinner in an old humbrol tin lid fixed on an angle, bit of 61 dabbed onto the upper angle of the lid then a quick dip into the thinner, dab that again into the 61 on the lid, then onto the figure.

I still can't get a good skin variation so i just go straight 61, otherwise they usually turn out like the black and white minstrel show faces....
